Female In Focus Awards 2022: The winners and their fantastic works

The international awards Female in focus by the British Journal of Photography and 1854 Media, were founded to showcase the work of outstanding female photographers and to combat gender inequality in the photography industry, as although 70-80% of photography students are women, they only represent 13-15% of professional photographers and that's something Female in Focus hopes to change.
It is the fourth year that the awards have announced the winners of the institution and this year's nominations were based on the concept of home and the domestic. This year's Female in Focus winners explore themes of gender, miscarriage, survival against all odds, dementia and divorce. From Gala Semenova's portrait capturing the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter to Marie Smith's series of self-portraits examining her identity, nature and climate change in her South London environment, this year's entries vary in artistic style and cover an excellent range of subjects.
The Italian documentary photographer Valentina Fusco and the social documentary and portrait photographer Lina Geoushy were selected as this year's series category winners. Works by the latter were also exhibited at the Athens Photo Festival 2022 at the Benaki Museum, in the series Shame Less: A Protest Against Sexual Violence, an artistic response to #MeToo in Cairo in June 2020.

The winning images from both the single image category and the image series category will be part of an exhibition at Photofusion in London in October and an exhibition in the US in 2023.
